He initially described a class of drives known as the life instincts and believed that these drives were responsible for much of our behavior. Eventually, he came to believe that life instincts alone could not explain all human behavior. With the publication of his book  Beyond the Pleasure Principal in 1920, Freud concluded that all instincts fall into one of two major classes: life instincts or death instincts. These instincts are essential for sustaining the life of the individual as well as the continuation of the species.?? While we tend to think of life instincts in term of sexual procreation, these drives also include such things as thirst, hunger, and pain avoidance. The energy created by the life instincts is known as libido. In his early psychoanalytic theory, Freud proposed that Eros was opposed by  forces of the ego (the  organized, realistic part of a persons psyche which mediates between desires). In this later views, he maintained that life instincts were opposed by the self-destructive death instincts, known as Thanatos. Behaviors commonly associated with life instincts include love, cooperation, and other ?prosocial actions.? The life instincts are focused on the preservation of life, both of the individual and of the species. This drive compels people to engage in actions that sustain their own lives, such as looking after their health and safety. It also exerts itself through sexual drives, motivating people to create and nurture new life.   Positive emotions such as love, affection, prosocial actions, and social cooperation are also associated with the life instincts. These behaviors support both individual well-being and the harmonious existence of a cooperative and healthy society. Death Instincts (Thanatos) The concept of the death instincts was initially described in Beyond the Pleasure Principle, in which Freud proposed that “the goal of all life is death.”  Freud believed that people typically channel their death instincts outwards.?? Aggression, for example, arises from the death instincts. Sometimes these instincts towards destruction can be directed inwards, however, which can result in self-harm or suicide. In support of his theory, Freud noted that people who experience a traumatic event would often reenact that experience. From this, he concluded that people hold an unconscious desire to die but that the life instincts largely temper this wish. Freud based his theory on a number of key experiences: In working with soldiers after World War I, Freud observed that his  subjects often re-enacted their battle experiences and noted that dreams occurring in traumatic have the characteristic of repeatedly bringing the patient back into the situation of his accident.Freud noted similar behavior in his 18-month-old grandson, Ernest, who played a game called Fort/Da whenever his mother was away. He further proposed that the death instincts were an extension of that compulsion wherein all living organisms have an instinctive pressure toward death which stands in stark contrast to the instinct to survive, procreate, and satisfy desires. Moreover, when this energy is directed outward toward others, Freud maintained, it is expressed as aggression and violence. Also, people's curiosity overcame thier fear and many people started to venture out and explore. New schools and colleges became more and more common. The Renaissance was started by many rich Italian cities, such as Florence, Ferrara, Milan ,and Venice. Because these cities were very wealthy, many merchants started to spend money on different things, such as painting, learning, new banking techniques, and new systems of government. These things gave rise to a new type of scholar, the humanist. Humanism was subjects concerned with humankind and culture. They stutied various things such as Latin, Greek language, literature and philosophy. Music and mathmatics were also studied as well. The Renaissance gave way to new forms of painting , art and sculpture. During the Renaissance, artist were no longer regarded as mere artisans, as they had been to the medieval past, but for the first time emerged as independent personalities, compared to poets and writers. Many artisans merged mathmatics with art , in order to become more precise in their measurements and to make sure an object was supported both rationally and porportionally. As a result painters tried and often suceeded into making their painting a window into the world. Artists also studied the way light hits objects and the way our eyes percieve light. In the last years, we have been facing the lack of values in the society and in human relationships. We consider as † value † the degree of importance, significance or meaning that objects acquire, the actions, the situations or positions, to the extent that respond to the needs of the species and the human being in a certain time, and the struggle for this, to locate and rank the material and spiritual goods in order of importance. Talking in terms of what it is worth an object, in one hand, to satisfy a need and on the other hand, to express the dependence of building a life goal. Compassion, freedom, humbleness, generosity, justice, peace, tolerance, honesty, loyalty, respect and trust among other values are no longer the qualities that characterize the people in the world. These new behaviors that have adopted the majority of the people are antisocial and dehumanized but unfortunately are installed in our society as common pattern. As a result we get attitudes such as: the lack of respect that has been lost to the women and in many cases the woman no longer demands that respect, because in many places the â€Å"gender equality† is going to new extremes and because of that there exists problems between them such as; the early addiction to the cigarette, consume of alcoholic beverages, smoking, which is not only seen in teenagers but in most of the community, also not planned pregnancies in teenagers, and sometimes this lack of responsibility is the reason an abortion takes place making them very cold and dehumanized. All of this is because the parents do not raise them the way it is supposed to, or have bad friends that give them the wrong meanings of the values, or they do not even put them in practice anymore. If in the education that they give them to the children there was more love and more interest, the world would not like it is now, with drug traffic, massacres, shootings, organized crime, kidnappings, robberies, and even wars. We all complain about the insecurity of our country, of the injustices and robberies committed by our rulers without realizing that these rulers and these killers were educated by a mother and a father who are part of our society and those who did not teach and show them the values needed to make them good citizens and above all, good people. Everything that has happened is due to a lack of values and influences by those who have lived and shared  his life with. Parents many times because of work, economic problems, stress, or sometimes by the simple fact of not wanting to fight, leave to one side the education of their children, and in a lot of cases they think they can replace the love with material things, buy the love from their off springs. There are parents who think that the schools are responsible for the moral education their children are receiving without realizing that the values are obtained from the house and everything comes from family, according to the experts until their first 7 years. Nobody is born knowing how to be father, so, you have to teach teenagers that they will be the adults who will need to be responsible to educate and teach these values to their children. Parents need to put more effort into forming a bond and communicating with their children, they need to gain trust and respect for them. But do not make the mistake of not knowing to mark their line of â€Å"freedom† to â€Å"debauchery†, because of that many teenagers do not know the respect and the education of being able to follow rules and listen to their elders. If we want to see a different world, a more balanced society and a more hopeful future, then this is the time to pause and think, what do values mean to me? Which ones take part in my life? What do others mean to me? And then we should stop thinking about the â€Å"me† and turn to the others, be generous and see that others need us more than we need ourselves. We need to get people to commit to their ideals, values, families, professions and personal lives. The values are and will always be a guide that will allow us to lead us on the right path, so we should reinforce, transmit and commit ourselves to put our values in practice every day. As a teenager I have many dreams just as you, I just wish that everything that happens around us changed. I do not want to be arms-crossed, and when I turn on my television see far too many tragedies happen that are no longer abnormal. Anyone can change from â€Å"normal† to something â€Å"different† if they are determined to do it. Believe me that it would be something very nice to see that our state, our country and our world grows with the help of so many people who like me want to achieve a goal in life without selfishness for the good of everyone. The important thing in life is not your position, but  your disposition. The change depends on all of us for the future that we want to create, be born as humans is not enough, we need to reach out to actually be humans. Some of the problems with McClellan that both books do address are his slowness and problems of exaggeration.   This exaggeration usually involved how many were in the opposing troops or in his troop’s inabilities to win a battle because of training time or supplies.   It is commonly accepted though that McClellan was considered a failure as a general, but Rowland still defends his generalship to the bitter end. There were several bad decisions made by McClellan during his service in the Civil War.   Union forces in the West had won some very important victories before McClellan could make a move to aid the fighting troops and this was a dark cloud over his leadership.   The successes around the edge of the confederacy did not help to relieve the frustration many were feeling at the inactivity or failure of the Union forces on the eastern front and this helped to reinforce the general attitude towards McClellan’s generalship. Lincoln, because of this frustration, relieved McClellan of his command and ordered him to take the offensive command at the head of the Army of the Potomac and forced McClellan to begin campaigning (McPherson, 1982 p. 211).   The overland route to Richmond was difficult so instead he moved his forces by water to the peninsula southeast of the confederate capital.   After landing at Fort Monroe, a Union post, McClellan began moving up the peninsula and in early April of 1862.   For months he remained at Yorktown choosing to besiege the enemy instead of attacking. This was another sign of his slowness and stagnation (Rowland, 1998 p. 107).   Then after the fall of Yorktown he pushed ahead to a point twenty miles from Richmond and waited for troops he had expected Lincoln would send, but that didn’t happen because Lincoln believed that the troops should instead be sent to defend Washington instead.   This infuriated McClellan. Many believe that if McClellan had moved more swiftly and decisively he probably would have captured Richmond with the forces he had available.   But with a combination of faulty intelligence reports and his own natural caution he failed.   He believed that he was outnumbered by the opposing troops and this was wrong (McPherson, 1982 p. 234).   It was by the end of May that the Confederates learned that McClellan’s army was divided on each side of the Chickahominy River and decided to attack. This battle named Seven Pines was where McClellan was barely able to hold his ground.   Finally Corps from the other side of the river crossed and saved his butt.   It was during this battle that General Lee took command of the confederate army.   General Lee at the end of June decided to put an all out effort to expel McClellan from his position on the outskirts of Richmond.   In a series of battles that lasted seven days McClellan warded off Lee’s final assaults at Malvera hill and decided to retreat down the peninsula to a more secure point.   In doing this it convinced Lincoln that the peninsula campaign was a wasted battle (Rowland, 1998 p. 66-67). It was on July 11th, 1862 that Lincoln appointed General Henry W. Halleck who had been in command in the western theater, to be the new general in chief.   Halleck was ordered by Lincoln to command McClellan to withdrawal his army from the peninsula and join forces under General Pope that was preparing to move on Richmond by the overland route.   Again McClellan was slow in responding and the confederates got to Pope before he did.   Pope was badly beaten before McClellan could arrive.   This pissed Lincoln off and McClellan was ordered back to Washington where he was stripped of his command, but later out of desperation he was reappointed to the head of the army of the Potomac (McPherson, 1982 p. 255-260). Meanwhile Lee and his troops went on to invade Maryland in hopes of isolating Washington from the rest of the North.   Soon McClellan caught up with him near Sharpsburg and this became the bloodiest one day battle of the Civil War.   At Antietam on September 17th almost five thousand solders were killed on both sides and another eighteen thousand were wounded. The battle ended in a draw forcing Lee to withdraw south of the Potomac River to protect his low supplies.   McClellan again was slow in his pursuit of the general and Lincoln blamed him for letting the enemy escape (Rowland, 1998 p.176).   This lead to Lincoln believing he needed a stronger general because McClellan was so slow that he appointed Ambrose B. Burnside as commander of the Army of the Potomac.   A mistake on Lincolns part because Rowland believed he was â€Å"replacing someone slow with someone that was considered dense† (Rowland, 1998 p. 223). I know Civil War history relies heavily on personal letters and notes, but I think taking these documents for face value is what McPherson did instead of adding his own personal beliefs.   Letters between McClellan and his wife were used a lot in Rowland’s book and this is fine but letters like these, to a wife during war, really aren’t the best use for facts.   I think that at times of war many of the letters to family and friends leave much details out so they would not be worried about their family members so much of the writings need to be taken with a grain of salt. It was a unique opportunity to enjoy the techno rhythms and to participate in the dancing marathon. The spirit of the crowd and the dominating emotion of delight did not allow the listeners to remai n indifferent. Getting them dancing and energizing them for the prolonged dancing marathons, pausing for only few seconds. By the end of the second day, everyone was exhausted but could not get enough of favorite music and bands. Though the largest part of the audience was the American youths, the international language of techno music united the representatives of various age and ethnic groups. The musical performance and the visual shows as well as the interpersonal communication with other fans became a memorable experience for all the guests of the festival. Providing plenty of opportunities for self expression, the festival became a splendid opportunity for the release of energy and getting emotions for escaping from the daily routine. The prolonged dancing marathons and the enormous excitement of the fans have shown how powerful the impact of the energizing electric music can be. The Electric Zoo festival produced a long-lasting impression upon me. At first, my delight with th e event was so overwhelming that it could hardly be translated into words. I must admit that the live music performance cannot be compared to listening to the studio record. The atmosphere of the festival as well as the common excitement of the music fans has a significant impact on the perception of the themes. My favorite rhythms got me dancing for hours not taking into account the exhaustion and the natural needs for rest. The positive emotions were so strong that I could not get enough of the music and enjoyed the music sessions. I though t that the simultaneous performances on the four stages would interfere one another and spoil the overall sound. On the contrary, the combination of the styles produced a peculiar effect and intensified the impressions of the fans. If it is possible and if it becomes a tradition in the world of electric music, I would go to the festival next year. The splendid idea of the Electric Zoo festival can be developed in future, welcoming wider audienc es and new bands and making particular improvements in the organization of the event.
